The portrait shows the irrepressible Orlando Hart, a prominent cordiner and bon vivant of the 18th century, who was elected Deacon of Cordiners on ten occasions between 1766 and 1789. He was elected Deacon-Convener of Trades on five occasions in 1771, 1775, 1785, 1788 and 1789. He was a bailie of Edinburgh and was depicted in Kay’s portraits. He was also a champion golfer.
